With the recent conclusion of the long awaited London and Paris Fashion Weeks, it’s time to weigh up the collections showcased on the season’s catwalk, proposals torn between a preference for opulent luxury, in the form of precious materials, sumptuous sparkling decorations and fabrics gathered from the past, and a strong Nineties trend offering a sly take on music, as shown by Hedi Slimane, returning with his second designer line for Saint Laurent, a highly acclaimed line in praise of freedom. At his Balenciaga debut, Alexander Wang responds by remaining true to the fashion house’s traditional models, focusing on pure lines and perfect striking couture cuts. Special monographs on these and other fashion greats, Tom Ford, back on track, and Valentino, with a collection of rare beauty inspired by Flemish art created by designing duo Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, are completed with an analysis of emerging trends. Designers reaffirm a love of heritage through a massive use of tweed, hound’s tooth, tartan and Prince of Wales, at times creating suits with a mannish flavour, at others proposing ultra-feminine coats and skirts along flowing lines. A profusion of animal patterns and leather project a tough look softened by cascades of flowers and elements plucked from nature, resulting in clothes and jewellery swamped in insects, plants and hazy landscapes. Followed by plenty of colour which, alongside omnipresent white and ever popular black and blue, melts into sugary tints of pink and light blue before developing into frenetic strokes and geometric abstract graphics flirting with contemporary art. A comfortable winter is guaranteed by abundant fur and knitwear, proposed in every shape and form, including examples embellished with precious decorations and functional zips.
