Heather Renée Sweet, better known as Dita Von Teese, was born in Rochester in 1972. Even as a little girl she was fascinated by the Hollywood divas of yesteryear, by sensual lacy lingerie and retro clothing which is still her trademark look today. Aged 19 she began working as a stripper in a nightclub, getting noticed immediately thanks to her great class and original performances, all created by Dita herself and always inspired by her favourite era, the 1940s: beehive hairdos, elbow-length gloves, corsets, stockings and suspenders. For her, striptease is a game of seduction, of temptation: "I want to show that the striptease act is not something dirty”, says Dita. “Some people say that what I do has nothing to do with sexual liberation. But I find earning 20 thousand dollars for 10 minutes’ work really quite liberating". Her career took off almost overnight and she became a muse for many artists, including one of the most exclusive French shoe designers, Christian Louboutin. Memorable shows have included a striptease act where she walked onto the stage wearing nothing but diamonds worth 2.5 million dollars, while the most legendary of all remains the champagne glass performance where she is immersed in a huge glass of champagne or Martini as a grand finale. Having featured on the cover of magazines the world over, her shows have been staged in all the most prestigious venues, and she was even a guest at the famous Crazy Horse in Paris. In 2008 she created a line of self-referential, Forties-inspired lingerie for Wonderbra. Given the collection’s great success, the partnership is to continue and for 2010 Dita will create four different lines for the celebrated bra and lingerie company, including Sparkle Teese by Dita Von Teese, Satin Teese by Dita Von Teese and Multi-Teese by Dita Von Teese.
